CANDYCE MARSH, FEMALE DRAG RACER, BECOMES FEATURED SPEAKER FOR NATIONAL GIRL SCOUTS USA, "Girls & Cars" DEPARTMENT OF LABOR FUNDED PROGRAM MARSH to speak at Buckeye Trails Girl Scouts (Dayton, OH) on Thursday July 26, 2007, on the Theme "Be Confident, Be Encouraged, Be Yourself - Every Dream Is Within Your Reach" DAYTON, OHIO, JULY 26, 2007 – When Girl Scouts of the USA's (GSUSA's) research division asked 11-17 year-old girls to share their hopes, dreams, challenges and fears, they were told loudly and clearly that being old enough to drive and receiving that all-important driver's license ranked as a key defining moment – almost a rite of passage. That's why Girl Scouts, as part of its overall leadership development program, partnered with Department of Labor, to deliver a unique automotive program entitled, "Girls & Cars." Designed for 14 - 17 year-old girls, "Girls & Cars" will help develop the next generation of girls pursuing careers in the automotive industry. To take the message of "Girls & Cars" even further, Girls Scouts USA has now partnered with Candyce Marsh, the first professional, African-American female drag racer in the country to compete in the Pro-Modified category of drag racing, to become the featured speaker for "Girls & Cars." As a keynote speaker, Marsh will be presenting to a number of Girl Scout Councils throughout the year, including the Buckeye Trails Girl Scouts on Thursday, July 26, 2007. "As a former Girl Scout myself, I am so excited about becoming a spokesman for the "Girls & Cars" program," said Marsh. "I look forward to sharing my personal experiences as a female in a non-traditional career, as well as sharing information about career opportunities in motorsports. I believe that my message will help to further advance the goals of the Department of Labor funded "Girls & Cars" program." Marsh's presentation during her visits to the councils will focus on the theme: "Be Confident, Be Encouraged, Be Yourself - Every Dream Is Within Your Reach". The presentation will speak to how girls should accept themselves and strive for their dreams, just as Marsh did when pursuing her dream of becoming a professional drag racer. In addition, the session will be girl centered and target several key principles of the Girl Scouts of American; discover, connect, and take action. Finally, the sessions will give girls exposure to motorsports and to non-traditional career opportunities in the motorsports arena. "At the end of my session, I really want the girls to will leave with the feeling that they are comfortable being themselves and that they can achieve their goals," said Marsh. "Additionally, I want the girls to leave with a sense of empowerment, that they can make a path for themselves on the ‘road less traveled' because they feel every dream is within their reach." Marsh knows firsthand the importance of having dreams within your reach. In her motorsports career alone, she has already made numerous accomplishments, including:
